Welcome to Ursula's Garden.

Enter my world of exotic plants, lush foliage, rare flowers, majestic palms, tropical flowering trees, countless orchids, and ferns in various shades of green. My collection of heliconias and gingers is continuously expanding too.

I dream to create a tropical paradise garden in the heart of The Gambia. It is my pleasure to share my plant world with you. Can I inspire you? Share my knowledge? Most of all, I hope you will enjoy visiting my wonderful paradise! My garden is where I relax and forget about my worries, where I create and dream...

Tropical gardening in The Gambia is growing strong. It has dedicated followers - people who are fortunate to travel the world, collecting and bringing interesting species from far away, exchanging plants and ideas and preserving local trees and flowers. There is a friendly competition of who has the most exotic and exclusive specimens. I have even heard of tea parties given by ladies to show off a special plant in bloom! Thoroughly enjoyed by the invited guests, I may add.

There is a large number of local "garden centres" where one can purchase a variety of plants. Situated along the main road, they offer the visitor a chance to find that much searched for plant, as well as discuss all sorts of things with the friendly gardener/grower.

I would like to mention here Bailo Susso, whom I have known for the last 18 years. He is well-known and respected by the expatriate community as well as by the Gambians. I would also like to mention Ebrahima, Mumin and Turrey, all dedicated to the craft of gardening, always willing to share their knowledge and experience with others.

Botanic Garden of The Gambia is located in the suburb of Bakau. It has many local trees and plants which can be seen in their maturity, as well as plants which originate in other countries. Botanic Garden has not always looked its best but, lately, it has been well tended for, so more a pleasure to visit.
